Accessible and Aging-in-Place Bathrooms in Ottawa

An accessible bathroom makes daily routines safer with features like a low-threshold shower, grab bars, seating and a handheld shower. Bath Planet Ottawa designs these bathrooms to look good, not clinical, and our accessibility renovations start at $8,999. We work with occupational and physiotherapists on placement and are approved vendors with Veterans Affairs and March of Dimes.

Why we care about this work

Jeff's mother once said she'd only want grab bars, a shower seat and a handheld shower if they looked beautiful, not like a hospital. Many of our clients feel the same way. They want to stay in their homes and stay independent, without a bathroom that announces it.

Features that make a difference

  • Low-threshold shower entry: replacing a tub with a walk-in shower removes the high step that causes so many slips.
  • Grab bars: Invisia grab bars double as shelves and towel bars, so they blend in.
  • Seating: built-in or fold-down seats let you sit while you wash.
  • Handheld showers: Moen handheld showers make washing easier seated or standing.
  • Slip-resistant surfaces: safer footing in tubs and showers.
  • Easy-clean walls: Bath Planet acrylic has no grout to scrub, which helps if bending and scrubbing are hard.

Getting placement right

A grab bar in the wrong spot doesn't help much. We work with occupational and physiotherapists to make sure every bar and seat is where you need it. If you already have recommendations from a therapist, share them at your consult. Because we take walls back to the studs, we can make sure bars are mounted securely.

Help paying for it

We're approved vendors with Veterans Affairs and March of Dimes. Eligibility and funding are decided by those programs, so we can't promise approval, but we're happy to explain how the process works. Financing is also available through iFinance, subject to approval; you can apply online.

Planning ahead, even if you don't need it yet

Many people renovate in their 50s or 60s and want the room to work for decades. Choosing a low-threshold shower and a handheld shower now, and planning where grab bars could go later, saves a second renovation down the road.

Where we work

We build accessible bathrooms throughout Ottawa and nearby communities, including Ottawa, Orléans, Barrhaven, Kanata, Nepean, Stittsville, Manotick, Gloucester and Alta Vista, Rockland, Russell and Embrun and Carleton Place and Almonte. If your current shower just needs updating, see shower replacement.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a bathroom accessible for seniors?

The biggest changes are removing the high tub step with a low-threshold shower, adding securely mounted grab bars, providing a seat and a handheld shower, and using slip-resistant surfaces.

How much does an accessible bathroom renovation cost?

Our accessibility renovations start at $8,999. Your price depends on the features you need, and you'll get a clear quote after a free in-home consult.

Do grab bars have to look institutional?

No. We use Invisia accessories that work as shelves and towel bars while giving you something solid to hold.

Can Veterans Affairs or March of Dimes help pay for my bathroom?

They may. We're approved vendors with both programs. Eligibility and funding are decided by the programs themselves, so ask us how the process works.

Do you work with occupational therapists?

Yes. We work with occupational and physiotherapists to make sure grab bars and seats are placed correctly for you.

Can I stay in my home during the renovation?

Yes. Most installs are completed in 2 to 7 days, and we plan any water or power interruptions with you in advance.
